Capuano opposes USED college ratings

Reps. Bob Goodlatte and Michael Capuano introduced a resolution today “strongly supporting the quality and value of diversity and innovation” in higher education — and “strongly disagreeing” with President Barack Obama’s proposed college ratings system.
The resolution and subsequent statements from the lawmakers stress the importance of access and variety in higher education and argue that a ratings system is “reductionist” federal overreach that would stifle marketplace competition and harm non-traditional students.

“It is not the place of the federal government, through a ratings system, to attempt to measure the value of an individual’s education,” Goodlatte said. “I have spoken with a number of college and universities presidents who are concerned about the negative impact this proposal may have on higher education, and I share their concerns.”
